Collaboration is Key
It’s a common belief that R&D and Marketing must work together for a company to succeed. However, it’s not uncommon for these two critical departments to operate independently, which can lead to missed opportunities.
Experience at P&G
While at Procter & Gamble, I noticed that collaboration between R&D and Marketing was standard, creating a powerful alliance that drove innovation and market relevance. Being a global company, the distance sometimes separated us, potentially leading to independent operations, but the leadership actively fostered a company culture that often overcame these barriers.
Effective leadership at P&G played a critical role. Upper management set clear guidelines on the roles and responsibilities of each department and strongly emphasized leading by example (‘walking the talk’), ensuring that all levels of the organization embraced these collaborative principles.
Understanding Cross-Industry Collaboration Dynamics
My initial belief was that the cooperative model I experienced at Procter & Gamble was a universal norm. However, I’ve realized that the synergy between R&D and marketing varies widely across different organizations.
I advocate for a shift in mindset among both company leaders and team members to prioritize such synergy. The benefits extend beyond the bottom line; this unity propels the business forward and enhances the work experience for everyone involved by fostering a culture of shared goals and collective success.

Synchronizing Efforts
R&D invents, and marketing understands consumer and customer desires. They must be in tune, or the product might miss the mark.
- Creating What Consumers and Customers Want: When R&D and marketing sync up, a product hits the sweet spot of innovation and customer desire.
- Team Growth and Development: R&D can teach marketing about technology innovation, while marketing can show R&D how their work fits into the market. Cross-learning helps projects flourish.
- Beyond Colleagues: Close collaboration can turn coworkers into friends, enriching the workplace with genuine connections. I’ve made many friends on the marketing and market research teams over the years.
- Career Boost: Successful projects as an outcome of this collaboration reflect the team’s ability and expertise, showcasing individual contributions and potentially leading to career advancement for everyone involved.
